Chiropractic for Children

Chiropractic Care of Children

Chiropractic care can benefit children & a variety of common conditions that they experience. Some of the most common issues that children deal with are chronic ear infections, headaches and digestive issues like constipation & GERD. Many of these issues are caused by a decreased ability of the body to adapt to stresses placed on the body. Children often experience more stress than most people realize.

Children & Stress

Stress on a baby really starts during the birthing process which is stressful for both the mother & the baby. Doctors are taught to extract the baby either with their hands, forceps of vacuum. The head is flexed forward and rotated to get one shoulder out then rotated to the opposite direction to get the other shoulder out. This is all being done while a pulling force is applied to the babies head & neck. There is inherent stress during the birth process and by no means am I placing any blame on any doctor assisting in the delivery process.

Children also fall frequently when they are learning to walk. Just think of the amount of times a baby falls on their bottom while learning. The same goes for when they are learning to ride a bike or play a new sport. Accidents happen & children are prone to these accidents as they are developing. For these reasons, chiropractic care for children can benefit them.

The Nervous System

The Nervous system is the master system of the human body. It can be broken down into different parts including the Central Nervous System (CNS) and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). Think of the nervous system as the wiring for the body. Electrical signals are constantly being sent to and from the body through the nervous system. These nerves are the “wires” that messages are sent through. When these nerves are protected, they function properly but if there is excess stress placed on them, they begin to falter and function at suboptimal levels. As the nerves continue to function poorly, they cause the organs that they communicate with to also function poorly. Over time, this process leads to secondary conditions such as pain, numbness & tingling, headaches & migraines, digestive issues as well as many other health conditions.

The Central Nervous System

The Central Nervous System is made up of two different anatomical structures. The Brain, which controls & coordinates the function of every cell, tissue & organ in the body; and the Spinal Cord. The spinal cord acts as the lifeline for the body. Without the spinal cord, communication between the brain and body would not exist other than the 12 nerves that exit the brain itself. These nerves are called cranial nerves and play a role in sight, hearing & balance, taste, movement of the facial muscles and a few other functions.

The Spinal Column

The spinal column plays an integral role in a persons health due to its intimate relationship with the brain, spinal cord and nerve system. When the spinal column is functioning properly its goal is to protect the nerve system and spinal cord, deliver nutrients to the brain and flushes harmful toxins out of the cerebral spinal fluid which the brain and spinal cord sits in. The spinal column is part of the skeletal system which functions to provide structure, protection of vital organs, movement along with others. When the spinal column is shifted outside of a normal range it results in physical limitations including a lack of mobility and a nerve injury causing nerve inflammation which affects whatever organ the injured nerve is traveling.

Structural Shifts of the Spine

Structural shifts of the spine case caused by spinal stress can have multiple impacts in the body. Pain in the muscles & joints leading to degeneration. These are things like neck & low back pain, stiffness & rigidity. These structural shifts can also cause nerve obstruction or a nerve injury which lowers the body’s ability to heal, interrupts proper physiology and causes a lowered resistance to stress.

The purpose of Chiropractic is to detect & correct those structural shifts to restore the structural integrity of the spine. Restoring the nerve communication throughout the body. Many people associate chiropractic with neck and back pain or making you feel better. Even though people do feel better, that is not the actual purpose of chiropractic. Its purpose is to restore and maintain function in the human body allowing the body to maintain homeostasis.

In our office we use an instrument that measures for nerve inflammation. Nerve inflammation is an objective measurement for an injured nerve. Our instrumentation allows us to identify the injured nerve without exposing our patients to more invasive imaging. Using our instrumentation, we are able to pinpoint the injured nerve. Correlate that nerve to how the structure of the spine has shifted based on our full spine Xrays. Then come up with a treatment plan that is tailored to that patients’ case. I should also mention that our Full Spine Xray and our instrumentation are two objective measurements. These measurements make our office unique and help our patients receive unique results.

NeuroStructural Chiropractic

The goal of treatment in our office is similar to that of an orthodontist; we aim to make gradual changes over a period of time with the goal of a long-term structural correction of the spine back within a normal range. By making a long-term correction we protect the nerve system. Allowing the body to heal from the nerve injury and helping the body to function at a higher level.

Remember that when a person is experiencing a symptom like pain, it is a sign that person there is an injury. That person should not be using that part of the body like they are when they experience pain. If someone chooses to mask the pain and continue to use the injured body part, they may cause more wear and tear. This may cause further damage that would have been prevented if the pain stopped them.

Chiropractic in Colorado Springs

As a Chiropractor in Colorado Springs I like to educate my patients and those interested in the benefits of chiropractic and I always like to start with the basics and build from there. Lets talk about chiropractic care for children. When looking at the human body we have a control center that sits in our skull, the brain; and our brain is able to communicate with the rest of our body through the spinal cord and nerve system. Without the spinal cord and nerve system the brain would have no way to tell the body what to do. The maintenance of the spinal cord and nerve systems integrity is vital to how the body functions. Our nerve system travels to every cell, tissue and organ in the body sending thousands of signals at a time without us thinking about most of them.
