Colorado Springs Chiropractor on the Nervous System

The Nervous System

The Nervous system is the mater system of the human body. It can be broken down into different parts including the Central Nervous System (CNS) and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). Think of the nervous system as the wiring for the body. Electrical signals are constantly being sent to and from the body through the nervous system. These nerves are the “wires” that messages are sent through. When these nerves are protected, they function properly but if there is excess stress placed on them, they begin to falter and function at suboptimal levels. As the nerves continue to function poorly, they cause the organs that they communicate with to also function poorly. Over time, this process leads to secondary conditions such as pain, numbness & tingling, headaches & migraines, digestive issues as well as many other health conditions.

The Central Nervous System

The Central Nervous System is made up of two different anatomical structures. The Brain, which controls & coordinates the function of every cell, tissue & organ in the body; and the Spinal Cord. The spinal cord acts as the lifeline for the body. Without the spinal cord, communication between the brain and body would not exist other than the 12 nerves that exit the brain itself. These nerves are called cranial nerves and play a role in sight, hearing & balance, taste, movement of the facial muscles and a few other functions.

The Peripheral Nervous System

The Peripheral Nervous system can be thought of as the “Tree of Life”.  These nerves branch off of the spinal cord and travel to each of the organs and tissues within the body. The nerves that branch directly off of the spinal cord are like tick cables with thousands of smaller wires within each cable. As the thick cable like nerves travel away from the spinal cord, nerves continue to  branch and connect with the tissue that they control the function of.

Structural Shifts of the Spine

Structural shifts of the spine case caused by spinal stress can have multiple impacts in the body. Pain in the muscles & joints leading to degeneration. These are things like neck & low back pain, stiffness & rigidity. These structural shifts can also cause nerve obstruction or a nerve injury which lowers the body’s ability to heal, interrupts proper physiology and causes a lowered resistance to stress.

The purpose of Chiropractic is to detect & correct those structural shifts to restore the structural integrity of the spine. Restoring the nerve communication throughout the body. Many people associate chiropractic with neck and back pain or making you feel better and even though people do feel better, that is not the actual purpose of chiropractic. Its purpose is to restore and maintain function in the human body allowing the body to maintain homeostasis.

In our office we use an instrument that measures for nerve inflammation. Nerve inflammation is an objective measurement for an injured nerve. Our instrumentation allows us to identify the injured nerve without exposing our patients to more invasive imaging unless it is necessary. Using our instrumentation, we are able to pinpoint the injured nerve. Correlate that nerve to how the structure of the spine has shifted based on our full spine Xrays. Then come up with a treatment plan that is tailored to that patients’ case. I should also mention that our Full Spine Xray and our instrumentation are two objective measurements that make our office unique and help our patients receive unique results.

NeuroStructural Chiropractic

The goal of treatment in our office is similar to that of an orthodontist; we aim to make gradual changes over a period of time with the goal of a long-term structural correction of the spine back within a normal range. By making a long-term correction we protect the nerve system, allowing the body to heal from the nerve injury and helping the body to function at a higher level.

Remember that when a person is experiencing a symptom like pain, it is a sign to that person that there is an injury and they should not be using that part of the body like they are when they experience pain. If someone chooses to mask the pain and continue to use the injured body part, they are causing more wear and tear and further damage that would have been prevented if the pain prevented them from doing what was causing the pain.

Hear Rate Variability

Chiropractic has been shown to have positive impact on HRV studies [1-4]. A core aim of chiropractic care is to optimize the health and wellbeing of individuals through the enhancement of nervous system function brought about by reducing nerve interference caused by vertebral subluxation [5]. The World Health Organization similarly defines chiropractic as a health care profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on general health. If you were unsure why so many profession athletes utilize chiropractic care on a regular basis, now you understand the benefits and advantages that these athletes are gaining over their competition who does not utilize chiropractic as part of their wellness routine.

Powers Chiropractic Group

At Powers Chiropractic Group we use an objective and conservative health care approach focused on the spine and nerve system. We assess how the structure of the spine is directly affecting the nerve system. In our office we run a model that is more similar to Luis Vuitton and very different from Massage Envy. Our office uses objective indicators to identify structural shifts of the spine outside of a normal structural range, similarly to how an engineer assesses the structural integrity of a building. Then we use instrumentation to identify nerve inflammation as the nerve system are exits the spine. This information is paired to create a well-rounded assessment of a patient’s condition which is used to generate a plan to correct the issue. In our office we identify symptoms that are really a secondary condition caused an injured nerve that resulted from a structural shift of the spine.
